Coca-Cola Plans to Boost the Usage of Reusable Packaging

Global beverage giant Coca-Cola which is often infamously called as one of the major plastic polluters in the world has taken a major step to overhaul its image. The company aims to make 25% of packaging reusable by 2030. Traditional refillable/returnable packaging accounted for approximately 16% of the company’s total volume in 2020.

According to Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF), converting 20% of global plastic packaging into reuse models is a $10bn business industry. Reusing helps control plastic waste pollution very efficiently and also proves beneficial in saving money for packaging purchase and disposal costs as a result of repeated reuse. Further, if you look at one study conducted by the World Economic Forum, it suggests that just 14% of plastic packaging is collected to be recycled globally. Such business decisions are thus seen as a positive step toward protecting the environment.

“We continue to put consumers at the center of all our endeavors. One way to do that is by offering sustainable packaging. Enhancing the usage of reusable packaging provides added value to consumers while supporting our World Without Waste goal to collect a bottle or can for every one we sell by 2030,” said Elaine Bowers Coventry, chief customer and commercial officer, The Coca-Cola Company.
